ABC’s of BlogHer

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Just spent an amazing few days in New York City at the BlogHer10 conference, courtesy of my friends at Mabel’s Labels, whose blogging contest I helped to judge.  An amazing time filled with inspiring, incredible, and indisputably funny and fabulous women, the corporate angle of this conference is what I was really interested in seeing up close.

I visited the ABC Studios to do a segment for CTV NewsChannel on “the business of blogging”, and to report back on what I saw there.  I have to admit, being in the studios where the signs in the hallway pointed to “World News Tonight” was pretty cool. I had my two teenagers sitting  just a few feet from me while I did this, which was also a unique thing. “Look kids Mommy actually works!”, and as my own mother said after seeing me, “It’s nice to see you talking about something other than the kids.”

Tell me what you think about the business of blogging – here are my thoughts in this clip.

If You Can Blog It There…

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

…you can blog it anywhere…that’s right I’m heading to New York City this week, to attend my very first BlogHer conference.  I’m pretty excited about it, for a number of reasons:

1) LOVE NYC

2) So happy to be an honourary team member of Mabels Labels, after helping to judge their BlogHer Blogging Contest, and looking forward to meeting up with the winners, and hanging out with good friends and fellow judges Erica Ehm and Scott Stratten.

3) Looking forward to meeting so many fun, funny, fabulous women whose Tweets and blogs I have enjoyed on-line and finally getting to meet in the real world, from across Canada and the US

4) Pleased to be showing off a new wardrobe from my clothing sponsor, Mark’s WorkWearHouse.  Okay, confession time – I couldn’t wait and already wore some of it on my Western Book Tour.  Good news is – it washes and travels perfectly. I think I am the only attendee not stressing about wardrobe, from what I read on Twitter.

5) I’m bringing my two teenagers with me, and leaving the little ones at home. I’ve never traveled with just them, as young adults, and I’m looking forward to exploring some shopping and restaurants that for once don’t include a PlayPlace or a dancing rodent of some kind.

6) When I”m NYC its pretty well physically impossible for me to be doing anything domestic at home. Finally, a legitimate excuse.

7) Taking my daughter, who is turning 19 while we’re there, out of a province where she could legally drink, into a state where she can not.  A good/bad parenting moment. I love these.

I’ll also be signing copies of my book, Shut Up and Eat: Tales of Chicken, Children and Chardonnay, on Friday, August 5th at 12:30-1:15 at the BlogHer bookstore, which will be located on the 2nd Floor of the Hilton (Avenue of the Americas) where the BlogHer conference is being held.

If you don’t already, follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/kathybuckworth where all my updates (and most likely good/bad parenting moments) will be posted.

It’s an honour just being…oh it’s better to win

On May 3rd I attended my third annual Mississauga Arts Coucil Awards (MARTY) presentation. This was also the third time I’d been nominated for Established Literary Arts, and I was imagining the fun I’d have carrying the title of the Susan Lucci of the MARTY’s. But then they called my name…and I discovered that winning this pointy award and feeling the love from Mississauga arts lovers was much much better. So honoured.

That’s me, with some media folks and the sponsor of the Established Literary Award, Pratt & Whitney.  (I’m the older one in the cap sleeves, FYI :)

Breakfast Television: The 3R’s of Summer

Friday, June 25th, 2010

If you didn’t get to tune into BreakfastTelevision (Toronto) this morning (Monday June 28th), I talked about the 3R’s of summer with the lovely Dina Pugliese (on camera, off camera we were all shoe talk) that will keep your kids happy, productive, and above all, keeping it real.

Here’s the clip

I had several suggestions from Tweeps to add a 4th R – for Red Wine, Riesling…very nice.
