Mississauga Arts Awards (MARTYS) 2011

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

It was pretty cool to win my first MARTY award last year (after being nominated twice before I was a little worried about becoming the Susan Lucci of Mississauga), for Established Literary Arts.

This year, it’s even more fun to have been asked to host the awards show, which will take place on Friday, May 13th at the Living Arts Centre.  This year’s show will feature performances by SGPD Bhangra Dance Troupe, the Jay Boehmer Jazz Trio and vocalist Shannon Butcher.

Now into its 17th year, the MARTY Awards celebrate the artistic achievement of established artists while encouraging and supporting emerging artistic talent.  Winners receive $1,000, press coverage, and recognition.  Every year the MARTYS is the pinnacle arts event in Mississasuga.

If you would like to attend the awards, visit the Mississauga Arts Council website for more information.

It’s an honour just being…oh it’s better to win

On May 3rd I attended my third annual Mississauga Arts Coucil Awards (MARTY) presentation. This was also the third time I’d been nominated for Established Literary Arts, and I was imagining the fun I’d have carrying the title of the Susan Lucci of the MARTY’s. But then they called my name…and I discovered that winning this pointy award and feeling the love from Mississauga arts lovers was much much better. So honoured.

That’s me, with some media folks and the sponsor of the Established Literary Award, Pratt & Whitney.  (I’m the older one in the cap sleeves, FYI :)

Vini, Vidi, TV

I came, I saw, I have watched some good children’s television.

As many parents know, finding television shows that their kids like to watch and that aren’t also thinly disguised commercials for the latest plastic weaponry toy can be tough.

That’s why I’m glad to be working with the fine folks at The Alliance for Children and Television, who are celebrating 35 years at the Awards of Excellence Gala on June 3rd in Toronto. Hosted by Stacie Mistysyn (Caitlin on Degrassi and Degrassi The Next Generation), Daniel Cook (This is Daniel Cook) and Rachel Marcus (Booky), it’s an evening of celebrating the high quality of Canadian children’s programming.

You can be a part of the fun and celebrations simply by entering the contest to win 1 of 2 sets of two tickets, where you will enjoy a meet & greet visit with the hosts and nominees, and in true awards show style, receive a swag bag – which I’m happy to announce includes a copy of my BlackBerry Diaries book, along with items from Toopy & Binoo, Mystery Hunters, Prank Patrol, and more. (Prize does not include tickets to the Gala event itself.)

Simply email ACT@lhmetropolis.com with your name, address, and phone number. Entry deadline is Friday May 29th at midnight.

Come on…who can’t sing at least the first four lines of “This is Daniel Cook” right now?
