I’m Doing Something Right?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

What a great week.

I’ve spent most of it talking about the results from a recent Telus commissioned Ipsos Reid Survey, which did for me what most parents are looking for when raising their kids: validation of doing something right.

Basically the results of this research confirmed a phenomenon which is happening in my house, and that is also happening across the country. At least according to the almost 4500 people Telus surveyed.

Their findings include:

o 75% of Canadian children in young families who use the Internet are proficient on it by age seven.

o 69% of Canadian parents think it’s important for children to be technology-savvy at an early age.

Sounds about right in my house – my seven year old son is a whiz at getting himself through various game and children’s entertainment sites, and his email (and spelling and typing) skills are improving by the minute. His first week back in school, he had to memorize his computer code. He needs to know how to do this stuff.

My three older children are better at finding things on-line than I am.

So, that’s maybe basic information you already knew.

But the best thing about these underlying facts?

We (Canadian parents) also think that a core value of technology is its ability to strengthen relationships.

Huh?

Oh yes, absolutely. In my house I thought it was a bad thing that my teens would text me from down the hall.

Not really.

You see, both teenagers and Moms have these things called “attitude” and “tone”. By the magic of texting, these can be eliminated. And, I’ve had conversations with my teens on their cell phones that we probably wouldn’t have had in person – without a door being slammed at any rate.

This in addition to the basic benefit of just staying connected by knowing where they are, and them knowing they can reach us almost anytime.

For more on the survey, read the news release here.

To read my interview with the Vancouver Sun on these findings, click here, and to see me talking with Sean O’Shea on Global News about it, click visit my website, and click on Where’s Kathy where you’ll find this segment, plus others.

Tonight, I’m heading down to do The Agenda with Steve Paikin. We’re going to be talking about whether women today are happier than they were in the 1970’s.

I’ll tell you what, keep showing me statistical data that proves I’m getting some parenting checkmarks, and I’ll be smiling a lot more.

Who Has Time For Happy?

Hoping everyone has settled into some sort of Back To School routine.

I know at my house the homework is flying around, the hockey sticks are being pulled out, and the school lunches are looking like, well, school lunches.

That’s partly why I’m glad this week to be busy outside of my messy house talking about a variety of topics many Moms (and Dads) are seeing in the media.

Tonight, Tuesday September 22nd, tune into Global TV (in Toronto), just after 6:30, as I discuss with Sean O’Shea Investigator/Consumer Specialist about how technology (the internet, cell phones, smart phones) is actually bringing families closer together.

Then, tomorrow I’ll be in the capital city, as I visit Ottawa’s A Channel Morning Show, to talk about family and technology and a recent study which shows that most parents think the internet is beneficial for their children, from quite a young age.

After that, I’ll be zipping over to radio station 88.5 FM Live to talk with Dave Schellenberg about the same issue.

Then it’s over to the CTV studio in Ottawa to talk with Paul Brent of “Tech Talk” about how my family has embraced technology (live on the Noon News and airing again on Sunday’s “Tech Talk”).

(Insert visit to kids’ school open house – if the flight is on time.)

Back to Toronto where Thursday morning I’ll be hosting a Playtex/Wee Welcome Session with the wonderful Maureen Dennis, as we talk to Moms dealing with Baby’s First Year. We’ll talk challenges, changes, and unexpected benefits.

We’ll be at the Indigo Bookstore in Yorkdale (Toronto). Visit www.weewelcome.ca to pre-register if you’re interested in going – and winning some cool prizes as well .

After talking to these Moms, (well not right after- have to race home, get kids off bus, supervise homework, make dinner, send one kid to hockey, then…) I’ll be heading to TVO to participate on a panel with The Agenda with Steve Paikin, as we discuss whether women are happier today, or in the 1970’s.

I have my opinion, and am looking forward to hearing from others on the panel. This airs live on TVO at 8:00 p.m., and re-runs again at 11:00 p.m…at which point I will have collapsed at home, with a pile of school permission forms, fundraising sheets, and dirty hockey gear surrounding me.

Hope you’re able to tune in or join me for some of this – remember follow me on Twitter for instant updates.
