Because I’m Canadian

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

While I’m enjoying my travels through the US (currently in Alpharetta Georgia) on the BlackBerry Diaries Book Tour, here’s a little reminder of my Canadian roots.

It’s all about the hockey, whether I like it or not.

My latest post for Health & Harmony chronicles my journey from what it’s like as a young Canadian girl in a hockey arena…all the way up to the oft-parodied and oft-misunderstood, Hockey Mom.

Looking forward to meeting some more Georgia Moms tomorrow at the North Point Mall – while my husband carries on with hockey duties north of the border.

She made the team.

High five on that one.

Oh, too hard? Do you need that hand for hockey sweetie?

Hockey Fights & Other Frights

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

There’s a debate going on right now in the world of professional hockey as to whether fighting should be banned.

To state that it’s an integral part of the game at present would be a huge understatement. Attend any NHL game and not only is it expected, it’s a biggest highlight for most attendees…the shouts of encouragement and the bloodthirsty cries…truly a sight which always leaves me flashing back to the Thunderdome in the movie Mad Max.

Well, Mel Gibson isn’t cute anymore, and either is the hockey fighting. Boys are dying from it. And here’s a lovely little poem written by my 10 year-old-hockey playing daughter, who attended a Toronto Maple Leafs game last weekend.

Hockey,
Sweaty, fun,
Hitting, slashing, fighting,
Hockey is the best -
Sticking, skating, punching,
Bleed, hurt,
Hockey

Just about sums it up. Guess all those words from the coaching staff about it all being for fun didn’t sink in. Especially not now in their play-offs. Do you need play-offs to see who had the most fun?

Maybe I can interest her in something a little less violent next year – like kick-boxing.

My Not So Secret Life

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Last week I was interviewed for a U.S. based website called www.sheknows.com about what “Soccer Moms” (that terrific terminology which converts to “Hockey Mom” in Canadian) are really thinking about when they’re at the soccer field (or that freezing cold arena).

Here’s an excerpt from my interview with the reporter:

“I never feel guilty about sneaking in BlackBerry time as I tell my kids (and this is true 99% of the time – 1% of the time I might be playing BrickBreaker, but whatever) that if I didn’t have my BlackBerry I wouldn’t be able to leave the home office to take them to their sports and other activities. Rather than seeing it as an electronic leash, I totally embrace it as a portable office. I can physically be in the moment with my children while virtually be keeping up with work.”

I know I’m not alone in this. We’re women. We multi-task. Read the whole article by clicking on this link.

I know some of you are with me. And if you’re not, maybe YOU can bring the “snack” to the game when it’s my turn. I know I’m going to forget.
