I miss school.
No, not my own school days, full of Snoopy lunch boxes, playing with a Footsie at recess, and hanging from (apparently) dangerous metal rocket shaped structures, but the school that existed for my own four children until two days ago.
I already have one child with me at all times (Seamus, my beloved BlackBerry), so the addition of the human type, while admittedly more warm and fun than Seamus, who can be a bit cold and quiet sometimes, has caused me to adjust my work at home schedule.
As in. Take out the word “work” in conjunction with the words “at home”. Between days filled with preparing grilled cheese sandwiches for teens who wake up at 2:00 in the afternoon, to hitting the driving range at 8:00 a.m. with a seven year-old who has been up for two hours before that, searching for last years favourite swimsuit, wiping up melted popsicles and watching half the neighbourhood’s kids run through my house, this WAHM gig has its own special challenges.
Of course there are summer camps lined up, but I’ve been rethinking the programs I’ve chosen for the kids (swimming, horseback riding, golf, canoeing, etc) and thinking of creating my own at home camp to teach them some real life skills which of course will benefit me as well.
This would include:
o Sandwich making 101: The hard part isn’t the making of the sandwich, but the clean up afterwards. Learn about fridge door opening, fridge door closing, how to place utensils in a dishwasher and the beauty of a closed cupboard door.
o Toilet paper replacement for beginners: Take a roll from under the sink, place it on holder.
o Toilet paper replacement, advanced: Walk upstairs, find the supply of toilet paper rolls, walk back downstairs and place it in on the powder room roll holder. Bonus marks for performing activity prior to actual need.
o Towel & swimsuit line art: Discover for yourself how functional and exciting a dry swimsuit and towel on a line can be. Recommended as a remedial program for those suffering from mouldy swimwear syndrome.
o Bicycle replacement therapy: Bikes come out of the garage, bikes go in the garage. Repeat again if necessary.
Failing a successful sign up level for these exciting and fulfilling children’s programs, the director will consider apprentice co-op trades with neighbouring camps.
Only two more months to go. Now THIS is work.
