Happy to announce that I have taken on the position of Chair, Awards, for @societyofamericantravelwriters (Canadian Chapter).

I'm so pleased to be working with such a professional board, headed up by @thecarolynray . Thanks to Gillian Hall for getting me up to speed quickly!

Currently awards are given in six categories:
Best Canadian Travel Story
Best International Travel Story
Best Service Story
Best Virtual Storytelling
Best Photography: People
Best Photography: Places

We have four judges (three writing, one photography) and we expect to open submissions for 2024 awards in June.

We're in the very preliminary planning stages right now, but stay tuned for more details and members start thinking about what you'd like to submit!

No foolin - I'll be on @globaledmonton Monday morning (April 1st) at 6:40am (MDT) with @erinchalmers

Did you grow up playing board games? I did, and my kids did...and now it's such a joy to introduce them to my grandkids. 10 month Sloane isn't quite ready for it yet, but my grandsons Cam (almost 3) and Owen (4) are into it!

Of course we started with Candyland, but I have a lot more up my sleeve (and in my cupboard) to share with them.

Why board games? The benefits are huge. Along with improved cognitive function (math, spelling, understanding, comprehension), they're developing social skills (taking turns, manners, interaction), and getting to use those developing tactile motor skills as they move their players around the board.

And guess what? These are the very skills we need to keep working on as we get older, so grandparents playing board games are getting the same benefits.

I'll share my favourites and where to start and how to age adjust the games as you go along.

Tune in to Global Edmonton - unless you're too busy putting cups of water on top of doors...(my dad did that).
